This morning I finally got back out there and caught up with my cousin for some birding and photography. We had a rather uneventful day walking around Huguenot until we got all the way around the park and noticed a bird land on a nearby palm tree. It was a Red-breasted Nuthatch!
The bird was very cooperative and even seemed to follow us as we (finally) tried to walk away from it. This is a very rare species in the area, and was last recorded in Duval County in February 2013. That winter was an irruption year where I saw them 6 times from November 2012 through that February. I never thought I’d see one at Huguenot of all places, but it sure made my day!
